
“This year, during 8 months, 675,079 visitors arrived at the protected areas of Georgia, which is 63% more compared to the same figure of last year. Among the visitors, 49% are citizens of Georgia, and 51% are nationals of other countries,” - the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia reports.
Reportedly, the number of visitors to the protected areas of Georgia reached a record high in 2019. It should be noted that the number of visitors to four protected areas, including the protected areas of Sataplia, the Navenekhevi Cave and the Chachuna Aghkvetili, has already exceeded the data of 2019. In total, compared to 2019, the number of visitors to the protected areas of Georgia has been recovered by 76%.
In the most popular protected areas of Georgia, during 8 months of 2022, compared to the same period of 2019, the number of visitors has increased: in Sataplia - by 38%, in the Navenekhevi Cave - by 14%, and was recovered: in the Mtirala National Park - by 98%, in the Tusheti National Park - by 99%, in the Prometheus Cave – by 92%, in the Martvili Canyon – by 82%, in the Okatse Canyon – by 71% and in the Algeti National Park – by 72%.
The Agency of Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia continues to develop ecotourism in the protected areas of Georgia. This year, a number of new ecotourism spaces were opened and renovated. Among them, the following were opened: the Tsalka Canyon, the Visitor Center in the Pshav-Khevsureti National Park, the Navenekhevi Cave; a new ecotourism trail was organized in the Vashlovani National Park, the Artsivi Gorge, a new trail - in the Lagodekhi Protected Areas and the Ninoskhevi Waterfall, a new exhibition space - in the Machakhela National Park, ecotourism infrastructure - in the Mtirala National Park and others.
