"Introduce me to this man" - the musician Gidi Meir, the grandson of the former Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meir, known as the Iron Lady, wrote these words on his Facebook page a year ago. The one, who Gidi Meir wanted to meet with was Abba Alaverdeli, the Georgian priest, Metropolitan of Alaverdi.
Gidi Meir arrived in Georgia just in order to fulfill his wish and see the country. Gidi Meir’s desire to meet and become acquainted with Abba Alaverdeli, visit the Diocese of Alaverdi, is very emotional reminding him of his grandmother, Golda Meir.
In his public preachings and sermons, Abba Alaverdeli often quotes the words of the Israeli Iron Lady.
Gidi Meir listened to one of these preachings, when the Metropolitan was quoting Golda Meir's words, while meeting with students at the Saint Andrew the First-Called Georgian University near the Patriarchate.
Abba Alaverdeli, whose many educational speeches and sermons are known, spoke to Georgian students about the past of Georgia, its conceptualization and the future of the country and repeated the words of the great Israeli public figure:
"If you want to build a country your children will return to and will only leave that for vacations; if you want to build a state in which you will have no fear of the future, then take these two major steps - declare corruption equal to treason, and call the corrupt officials traitors until the Seventh Generation, make the people of the three professions, soldiers, teachers and doctors become representatives of the most highly-paid and the most-respected profession, and, most importantly, work, work and work, because no one will save you, no one will protect you, except your own selves. No one else needs the success and prosperity of your country, but only you. When it becomes not just words and slogans, but the way of your life, only then you will reach your goal."
This request of Gidi Meir was not left without attention by the Israel-Georgia Chamber of Business and its Chairman, Itsik Moshe, who announced to the Georgian audience through the social media that Gidi Meir was scheduled to visit Georgia.
To be informed, Abba Alaverdeli's meeting with students was covered by the Georgian news portal Spacesnews. Gidi Meir published the recording spread by Spacesnews on his own page, which received a great response from his audience.
Golda Meir
Golda Meir was one of the most powerful and influential female politicians of the 20th century.
During the most difficult period for the State of Israel, Golda Meir held the post of Prime Minister of the country. She had to take part in armed conflicts many times and make decisions of paramount importance to preserve the sovereignty of the state.
Golda was nicknamed the "Founding Mother of Israel" and the "Iron Lady" by the Jewish people, which makes it clear how significant her political contributions were to the Jewish nation.
A few years before the founding of Israel, Golda spearheaded the Jewish-Zionist movement and created the State of Israel. 24 people signed the Israel Declaration of Independence, one of whom was Golda Meir.
