,,16 gazelles were transferred from the government of Azerbaijan to Georgia. Gazelles were released in the protected area of the Nugzar Zazanashvili Samukhe in Dedoplistskaro municipality. The mentioned event is another step forward for the full recovery of turkeys in Georgia," - the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia said.
The gazelle restoration program has been implemented in Georgia since 2013. A gazelle became extinct in Georgia in the 60s of the last century.
"The mentioned program is one of the successful conservation projects and significantly contributes to the population recovery. The program is implemented in close cooperation between the Government of Georgia and the Caucasus Program Office of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and with the active support of the Government of Azerbaijan. The implementation of the gazelle restoration program in Georgia started with the financial support of the German government (BMZ/KfW). Financial support for the current phase of the program is provided by WWF-Germany and WWF-Austria. The gazelle restoration program is being successfully implemented, and currently, their number in the Samukhe Valley exceeds 300 individuals.
The ceremony of handing over the turkeys was attended by Yuri Nozadze, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Karlo Amirgulashvili, Head of the Department of Biodiversity and Forestry of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Iosebashvili, Chairman of the Protected Areas Agency, Toma Dekanoidze, Deputy Chairman, and the Caucasus Program of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and were being observed by the representatives of the office," the Agency said.
