The new U.S. administration has acknowledged that American funds, under the guise of foreign aid, were used to promote ideologies, censorship, political interference, and even government overthrows. In response, the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated that this admission raises questions about the integrity of other countries' spending in Georgia. He called on other donor nations to ensure transparency regarding the use of their taxpayers' money.
Papuashvili also referred to a letter he sent to the EU Ambassador in 2023, requesting transparency in the funding of the European Endowment for Democracy (EED), which he argued is fully funded by Brussels and managed by prominent MEPs. He criticized the refusal he received, describing it as an excuse.
Furthermore, Papuashvili pointed to the issue of illegal foreign funding in the 2024 elections, recalling how the Anti-Corruption Bureau was pressured to suspend an investigation into foreign donors' involvement. He concluded by stressing the need for all embassies to publicly disclose every cent spent on elections and domestic political processes, especially in light of the recent U.S. developments.
