“In order to preserve the traditional varieties of wheat, corn and beans, the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture of Georgia is launching a grant project of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The project is 4 years long and will be implemented in 8 regions of Georgia,” - the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia reports.
Reportedly, the main goal of the project is to study the current state of target crop collections in Georgia, enrich the plant gene bank collection, return the genetic resources of target crops taken out of Georgia at different times and placed in foreign gene banks, and organize expeditions to collect genetic resources. The project also envisages the organization of field trials for wheat, corn and bean crops, the results of which will be uploaded to the local database of the gene bank of plant genetic resources and to the European catalog (EURISCO).
As a result of the implementation of the project, the use and conservation of traditional varieties will be improved, the morphological, agricultural and passport data of the collections of target crops will be available at the national and international level, the spread of local varieties in the conditions of farms will be facilitated, which, in turn, will contribute to the preservation of their biodiversity, the long-term ex-situ quality management system and national protocols will be implemented for in-situ conservation, and seed material of traditional varieties will be provided to farmers.
Within the framework of the project, it is planned to organize workshops, field days, online webinars and exhibition/sales for farmers.
