On May 24-25, the President of the National Bank of Georgia participated in the Euromoney Annual Central and Eastern Europe Forum. The meeting was attended by investors, politicians, financiers and central bank governors from different countries.
The President of the National Bank of Georgia participated in the discussion - "Digital Currency of the Central Bank: How and Why?" The President of the National Bank of Georgia spoke about the importance of digital currency and focused on the steps taken by the National Bank to develop digital Lari.
"Financial inclusion can really be considered as one of the advantages of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Modern technologies offer much faster and more affordable services than traditional banking services; there are also ways to use digital currency without internet. Consequently, access to the part of the population that is deprived of this opportunity is becoming easier. However, financial inclusion for Georgia is not really the main benefit of the CBDC. One of the main values of the Central Bank Digital Currency is that it applies to the modern technologies in such a way as to make financial services more efficient, cheaper and easier for end users and even replace some processes in the non-financial sector such as property registration. However, I am convinced that the main feature of these currencies that attracts investors is their anonymity and speculative nature. On the other hand, CBDCs with the same or similar technology should provide more transparency and more value stability. For any asset to be considered cash, value supplies must be provided. It is obvious that the currencies issued by the central banks offer more reliability," - said Koba Gvenetadze.
