The President of the National Bank of Georgia, Koba Gvenetadze, met with the Ambassador of the European Union, Pawel Herczynski. At the introductory meeting, the conversation touched upon the importance of close cooperation between Georgia and the European Union and the prospects of further cooperation.
Attention was focused on the economic situation of the region and the challenges and threats in the financial sector. Koba Gvenetadze said that “the consistent and timely measures taken by the National Bank before the pandemic helped the country to deal with the global challenges that the world is facing today.
He also noted that the National Bank had joined the financial sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation by the USA, Great Britain, the European Union and other countries due to the aggressive military actions carried out in Ukraine. It was also mentioned about the twinning project, which the Polish Financial Supervision Agency, together with the central banks of Poland and Lithuania, was actively involved in. With their help, a legislative package of amendments was prepared, which brought the legislation of Georgia even closer to the legislation of the European Union. As a result of the aforementioned cooperation that it became possible to submit an application for Georgia's Accession to the geographical space of SEPA.
This year, we submitted an official application for joining the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), which will significantly increase the credibility of the Georgian financial sector in the international arena - trade relations with the European Economic Area will be simplified; Georgian citizens will benefit from simplified and cheaper services, which is especially important, including remittances from the EU countries. Taking into account the growing trend, Georgia's future is in Europe and SEPA membership will bring us one step closer to the membership of the European family," - Koba Gvenetadze said.
