It has been 31 years since the fall of Sokhumi. Politicians are planning to visit the heroes' memorial on this day.
The military confrontation in Abkhazia started on August 14, 1992. The "Abkhazian Guard" created by the decree of Vladislav Ardzinba, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, opened fire on the National Guard of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, which entered the territory of Abkhazia to protect the Sochi-Ingiri railway section, near the village of Okhurei, Ochamchire district.
The State Council decided to send the National Guard to Abkhazia to protect the section of the Sochi-Ingiri railway on August 11, after an agreement with Vladislav Ardzinba. Despite the agreement, the "Abkhazian Guard" resisted the Georgian National Guard in Ochamchire and Gulrifshi districts and in the city of Sokhumi, which led to the start of hostilities in Abkhazia.
The military conflict in Abkhazia lasted 13 months and 13 days and ended on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sokhumi and the defeat of the Georgian armed forces.
On September 16, 1993, the Abkhazian side violated the July 27 Sochi agreement on "ceasefire and separation of forces" and began an assault to take Sokhumi. The battle for Sukhumi lasted for 11 days. The Abkhazian-Russian, North Caucasian and Cossack units stormed the building of the Council of Ministers of Abkhazia early in the morning on September 27 and captured the chairman of the Council of Ministers of Abkhazia, Zhiuli Shartava, the mayor of Sokhumi, Guram Gabeskiria, and 27 employees of the Council of Ministers, and then shot all of them.
On September 30, 1993, the Russian-Abkhaz units occupied positions along the Enguri River. The government of the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia celebrates "Victory over Georgia and Independence Day of Abkhazia" every year on September 30.
According to the unconfirmed data of the Georgian side, during the military conflict in Abkhazia in 1992-1993, more than 10 thousand soldiers and civilians were killed on the Georgian side. 300 thousand Georgians displaced from Abkhazia remained homeless. According to the data of the Abkhazian side, 3,500 Abkhazians were killed and 2,000 were wounded.
