"The development of the intellectual property system is one of the important and priority directions of the Government of Georgia. Protection of intellectual property rights and promotion of their implementation accelerates the process of economic development, creates new branches of industry and jobs, improves the quality and level of living conditions," - said the Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Levan Davitashvili while delivering a speech at the international conference The Role of IP Offices in the National Innovation Ecosystem. The conference was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – “Sakpatenti”.
According to the Minister, more than one project is implemented through Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA) in order to promote the commercialization of knowledge and innovation, stimulate the use of innovations and technologies in all sectors of the economy, as well as create the necessary environment for the growth of exports of innovations and high-tech products. Levan Davitashvili noted that various startup and innovative, scientific and research projects are also financed with the support of the government. Levan Davitashvili drew attention to the Kutaisi International University, which aims to promote the development of innovations and the latest technologies.
Levan Davitashvili also emphasized the importance of developing the system of geographical indications as an effective tool for increasing the export potential and competitiveness of the Georgian products. In his assessment, the protection of geographical indications is a constituent part of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) signed between the European Union and Georgia and is one of the strategic directions of Georgia's agricultural development. Currently, more than 60 of the products (wine, mineral water, cheese, etc.) manufactured in Georgia are registered as geographical indications (GI) and a large part of them is exported.
