The first international summit of protected areas will be held in Borjomi on November 7-9, 2023, organized by the Protected Areas Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia. More than 100 delegates from 20 countries of the world are attending the event.
The Borjomi Summit is the first precedent in the history of protected areas of Georgia, where, together with representatives of the world's leading national parks and international environmental organizations, it will be possible to get to know, discuss and share experience with internationally recognized, successful management practices of national parks.
The First International Summit of Protected Areas was opened by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Yuri Nozadze. The event is being attended by Khatia Tsilosani, Deputy Chairman of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, representatives of international and local environmental organizations and the diplomatic corps.
The program of the event includes panel discussions, thematic seminars and presentations. International speakers from the USA, Great Britain, Romania, Macedonia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, North Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and the Republic of Korea will consider such important issues as international models of biodiversity conservation, modern technologies and systems in national parks and the ways to promote sustainable development of ecotourism.
As part of the summit, special sessions will also be held - the World Cafe methodology, which aims at an in-depth study of the key issues and challenges in the development of national parks. The issues of national parks protection and law enforcement, sustainable tourism development, financial sustainability, systems and technologies, biodiversity restoration will be discussed.
The event is organized with the support of the Global Conservation Fund. Co-sponsors of the event are the Caucasus Nature Fund, the Bank of Georgia, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Succow Foundation, the USAID Economic Security Program and SABUKO.
