According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the challenges and opportunities of the olive sector were discussed at the meeting.
Speaking at the session, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili, said that supporting the cultivation of olives is part of the country's agricultural development strategy and it has great potential due to Georgia's climatic conditions.
"With the co-financing and support of the state, olive plantations have already been cultivated on an area of up to 1000 hectares in Georgia. Our plan is to cover several tens of thousands of hectares of olive groves in the near future, which will allow us to increase our export opportunities. I think, with the active cooperation of the state and the private sector, we will be able to make this field competitive in the country," - Levan Davitashvili said.
Giorgi Svanidze, President of the International Olive Council, Founder and President of the Olive Association in Georgia, noted that Georgia is ready to further develop olive oil production.
"It is welcome that Georgia is a member of the International Olive Council. It is an organization that controls 90% of the world olive income and 74% of the trade. Therefore, being in this organization is a step forward for Georgia. The World Olive Council, together with the Minister of Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili, and us, has developed a strategy on how to develop this sector in Georgia and how to place the products on the world market,” - said Giorgi Svanidze.
Georgia joined the International Olive Council in 2019, and in 2020 became the country chairing the Council. The aim of the International Olive Council is to contribute to the development of olive culture; they organize forums for international discussion to resolve any issues related to the olive sector.
The hosting of this international meeting is of great importance for Georgia, as it is the most important global event in the field of olives.
