At the opening ceremony of a new multifunctional sports complex in Zugdidi, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the importance of investing in sports infrastructure to support the development of young talent and strengthen Georgia’s position on the global sporting stage.
"Today marks a significant milestone for Zugdidi, this region, and most importantly, our future generations. The opening of this sports complex represents new opportunities—especially for our youth," the Prime Minister stated.
Highlighting the region’s legacy of sporting excellence, Kobakhidze praised legendary athletes from Samegrelo, such as Nona Gaprindashvili and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. He stressed the government's responsibility to nurture this legacy by providing the necessary infrastructure and support.
“Samegrelo has given Georgia and the world countless sporting legends. The children of this region have brought pride to our country, and through sport—a universal language—they have become our finest ambassadors,” he said.
The newly opened facility in Zugdidi is designed to meet European standards and will be open to individuals of all ages and abilities, including those with disabilities. It features large and small swimming pools suitable for international water polo matches, fitness and strength training areas, and will soon include a basketball hall, padel and tennis courts.
“This initiative promotes both elite and grassroots sport, while also encouraging healthier lifestyles. Accessibility and inclusivity are central to our approach,” Kobakhidze added.
He outlined the government's broader vision, which includes constructing similar multifunctional sports centers in all 63 regional municipalities. The sports budget has been increased, and a dedicated ministry has been established to oversee sports development across the country.
Kobakhidze also pointed to Georgia’s record-breaking performance last year, with athletes winning 1,259 medals internationally. He argued that Georgia has the potential to emulate the success of countries like Croatia—small nations with outsized sporting achievements.
“We are a talented sporting nation. With sustained investment and a clear long-term vision, Georgia can become the next Croatia—renowned not just for individual talent, but for excellence in team sports as well. Building infrastructure like this complex in Zugdidi is a critical part of that journey,” the Prime Minister concluded.
