“Port sector operational metrics are approaching peak capacity, yet optimisation of harbour workflows and improved operational management models enable seaports to handle expanding cargo flows efficiently,” Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili stated during her opening address at the Georgia International Maritime Forum (GIMF 2026) in Batumi.

The Minister highlighted that the state is actively collaborating with the private sector to fully exploit the capacity of the country’s maritime infrastructure.

“A cornerstone project for advancing Georgia’s maritime capability is the Anaklia Deep Sea Port. We are developing Anaklia under the landlord port model that balances the interests of the state and the private sector while opening avenues for broad regional and international participation,” Mariam Kvrivishvili stated.

According to the Minister, commercial operations at the port will commence in 2029, with an initial annual throughput capacity of at least 600,000 TEU and approximately 10 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo. The state will invest USD 700 million, bringing the project’s total capital outlay to USD 1.1 billion, including private sector investment.

“Infrastructure represents only one component. Equally critical to the Middle Corridor’s competitiveness are synchronised transport schedules, streamlined customs procedures, and interoperable digital systems. We stand ready to work alongside partner nations, international organisations, and the private sector to ensure the Middle Corridor functions as a unified, seamless, efficient, and reliable transit route.

Human capital constitutes one of the foremost assets of our maritime sector. Today, Georgia boasts over 21,000 certified seafarers, up from roughly 8,000 in 2012. Their contribution to the Georgian economy stands at approximately 1 billion GEL,” Kvrivishvili added.

She noted that a catalyst behind this expansion was the government’s investment of over 50 million GEL into maritime education and training since 2012.

“Today, Georgian seafarers are formally recognised by 75 leading global maritime flag states, including the European Union,” the Minister concluded.
