In a video address to the Warsaw Security Forum, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Moldova’s recent elections as a victory for European values, declaring that "the idea of Europe won – the idea of normal and stable national development."
Zelenskyy said Russia’s efforts to destabilize Moldova through subversion and corruption had failed, despite “huge resources” spent. He noted that he had personally congratulated Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and highlighted the recent extradition of a former oligarch as a key moment of justice and European solidarity.
“This matters not only for Moldova but for all of Europe,” Zelenskyy said, adding that anyone who collaborates with Moscow “must one day be held accountable.”
Drawing a sharp contrast with Georgia, Zelenskyy expressed concern over Tbilisi’s political direction: “Today, Georgia is in many ways lost to Europe. Maybe one day it will return, but for that, Europe must not close its eyes to what is happening there — and in Belarus.”
He stressed the importance of sustained European support for Moldova, particularly in meeting voters’ expectations post-election: “Europe can and must help Moldova — based on our common interests.”
Zelenskyy echoed similar remarks made at the UN General Assembly on September 24, where he warned that “Europe cannot afford to lose Moldova,” while noting the increasing Russian influence over Georgia and Belarus.
