According to the report published by Geostat, wheat harvest is rising in Georgia. The document reads the harvest in 2021 amounted to 136 thousand tons, which is 34 thousand tons or 33% more than the volume reported previous year.
The report shows that the increase in the wheat harvest last year was mainly due to the increase in crop in Kakheti region.
Despite the increase in yields, local production is not enough to meet demands. In 2021, the country imported 482 thousand tons of wheat, out of which more than 95% was Russian.
According to Geostat, wheat production is rising in Georgia:
In 2018 - 107 thousand tons;
In 2019 - 101 thousand tons;
In 2020 - 102 thousand tons;
In 2021 - 136 thousand tons.
In 2022, there are significant changes in the world wheat market, as well as the Georgian market. Wheat prices have risen sharply worldwide in the wake of Russia's war in Ukraine. Against the background of rising prices, Georgia switched to importing flour instead of wheat, which led to the closure of local mills.
