Vakhtang Gomelauri, the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, has announced his resignation, stating that the current calm in the country provided the right moment for him to step down and focus on his family.
“Today, when the situation in the country is calm, I took the liberty and asked my team to accept my resignation, which will allow me to dedicate more time to my family—my wife, children, and newly born grandchild,” Gomelauri said in a public statement.
He acknowledged that the decision was a difficult one but emphasized that he remains fully loyal to the ruling party, Georgian Dream.
“This was not an easy decision,” he said. “Since 2011, I have been part of the struggle led by Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili that brought about major changes in Georgia. I take pride in every achievement realized by this government, and I remain loyal to this team. In the future, if the country or the ruling party needs my support, I will be ready to step in.”
Gomelauri reflected on his more than a decade of public service, during which he held key roles including Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the State Security Service, and Deputy Prime Minister.
He expressed gratitude to Bidzina Ivanishvili for his trust and leadership, to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the governmental team for their support, and to all Ministry of Internal Affairs personnel—police officers, firefighters, and rescuers—with whom he worked to ensure national security.
“I wish them and the incoming minister success in their work,” Gomelauri concluded. “I remain devoted to my country and my team, and I wish Georgia peace, security, and success in achieving its goals.”
