“Senators will introduce the Georgian People's Act in the US Senate,” - the Georgian Service of Voice of America reports.
In particular, the initiators are Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Jim Risch.
The Georgian People's Act creates a framework for holding accountable Georgian individuals responsible for corruption, human rights violations, and promoting or facilitating the passage of the "Foreign Agents" law.
The bill also envisages long-term support of the United States to the Georgian people, the overwhelming majority of whom support the Euro-Atlantic future.
In a statement provided to Voice of America, it is said that the legislation includes two parts.
The statement “emphasizes the US Senate's commitment to support Georgia's civil society in light of recent events.
Allocates at least 50 million US dollars to support democracy and rule of law projects in Georgia.
Directs the State Department and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to determine how to continue to support civil society in Georgia in light of recent developments.
Requires two reports to be drawn up to assess the extent of harmful foreign influence in Georgia and efforts to support Georgian political prisoners."
The bill will be introduced in the Senate this week. Speaking about it, Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Jim Risch said that the purpose of the bill is to punish those responsible for changing the political course of Georgia, while at the same time showing support to the Georgian people.
"As a long-time supporter of Georgia and its Euro-Atlantic integration, I am deeply concerned and disappointed by the adoption of the bill on foreign agents and the rapid changes in political direction in the country, which are contrary to the wishes of the Georgian people," Shaheen said.
"The legislation that Senator Risch and I will introduce imposes serious sanctions on those in Georgia responsible for this policy change and will review US aid to the country. It also clearly underscores our unwavering commitment to the Georgian people, civil society, and efforts toward democracy", - she added.
Senator Risch states that the so-called Foreign Agents Act will turn the country towards Russia.
"The United States has been supporting Georgia's democratic aspirations for a long time. However, I am deeply concerned about the chilling effect of the Foreign Agents Act on Georgia's civil life. If the government of Georgia decides to refuse to build a free and democratic society, it should not expect our support to continue," said Risch. "Obviously, the absolute majority of Georgian citizens want the country to join the European Union. Overriding the president's veto and passing the Foreign Agents Act will turn Georgia towards Russia," said Senator Risch.
