Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has introduced a proposal to amend the Georgian Nightmare Non-Recognition Act as part of the upcoming U.S. State Department Authorisation Act.
Wilson announced the move on social media. His proposed amendment would block the U.S. government and its agencies from recognizing Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party.
The amendment reads:
"No Federal official or employee may take any action, and no Federal funds may be made available, to recognise or otherwise imply, in any manner, United States recognition of the current Georgian Dream-led Government in Georgia."
The proposal will now be reviewed by the House of Representatives.
Wilson is also behind the MEGOBARI Act, a bill designed to sanction individuals who undermine democracy in Georgia.
Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen commented during a Helsinki Commission meeting on September 11 that the MEGOBARI Act is unlikely to pass the Senate. He suggested the failure may be linked to business interests, including a port project backed by a single influential individual.
