At the U.S. Independence Day celebration in Tbilisi, Ambassador Robin Dunnigan delivered an emotional farewell, reaffirming America’s commitment to Georgia’s democratic future.
“I will leave a piece of my heart behind when I depart. And I will never stop believing in and supporting the future of democracy in Georgia,” she said.
Dunnigan reflected on the enduring U.S.-Georgia partnership, which began after Georgia’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. “We have been true partners in our quest for democracy for over three decades,” she noted, citing shared efforts in development, defense, education, and civil society.
Speaking on the values of democracy, the Ambassador emphasized three key elements: promise, duty, and optimism. She praised Georgia’s vibrant civil society, religious tolerance, and young generation as reasons for hope.
She also addressed growing political tensions, defending the right to dissent and calling out the repression of political opponents and civil society actors. Quoting JFK and Vice President Harris, she stressed that freedom requires constant vigilance.
As she prepares to retire after 33 years in diplomacy, Dunnigan thanked Georgians for their warmth and hospitality. “We will forever be friends of Georgia,” she said.
The event featured performances by the Gori Girls Choir and the State of Georgia National Guard Band, with attendance from top Georgian officials and opposition leaders.
