UNESCO has officially added “Georgian Wheat Culture: Traditions and Rituals” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Georgian Ministry of Culture announced.
The decision was made during the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi.
The Ministry highlighted that UNESCO’s recognition honors the centuries-old labor, knowledge, and practices of the Georgian people, emphasizes the importance of local wheat varieties, strengthens the connection between spiritual and material culture, and ensures that these traditions are preserved for future generations.
Georgian Wheat Culture was already declared a nationally important intangible cultural heritage by the Government of Georgia on March 27, 2024 (Resolution No. 98).
Georgia submitted its nomination to UNESCO on March 28, 2024, and it successfully passed all evaluation stages.
