During a special emergency session, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling on Russia to return Ukrainian children who have been forcibly taken. The resolution received support from 91 countries, including Georgia, and was sponsored by the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
Supporters of the resolution urged Moscow to “ensure the immediate, safe, and unconditional return of all Ukrainian children who have been forcibly transferred or deported.”
Russia, along with 11 other countries including Belarus, Iran, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Mali, voted against the measure. Another 57 nations, including China, India, Brazil, and Armenia, abstained.
The resolution follows a high-profile meeting at the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
