Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili reaffirmed that the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes remains a top priority for the country. She stressed that the Georgian government persistently advocates for this issue and integrates it into the agendas of international organisations.
Botchorishvili highlighted the importance of the UN General Assembly resolution, calling it a vital tool for drawing international attention to the plight of displaced persons from Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia.
“The support that Georgia received today is the result of very intensive work and enormous efforts by Georgian diplomacy – a very major victory,” said the Foreign Minister. “We have not seen such broad international backing since 2008, when Georgia first began presenting this resolution to the UN. This achievement is a testament to the hard work behind the scenes and the continued support of our international partners.”
She expressed gratitude to the countries that co-sponsored and co-initiated the resolution, noting that their backing was instrumental in its adoption. Botchorishvili also emphasized the need to keep the issue consistently on the international agenda and to utilize every available platform to advocate for Georgia’s displaced population.
The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution titled “On the Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia”, with a record 107 countries voting in favor. The resolution was co-sponsored by 63 nations from various regions, reflecting growing international support for Georgia’s stance.
