The United Kingdom has once again voiced strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a session of the UN Human Rights Council held on October 8 in Geneva. In a statement released by the British Embassy, the UK condemned Russia’s continued occupation of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions.
The UK reiterated its backing of the UN Human Rights Council Resolution 60/16, titled “Cooperation with Georgia,” which addresses ongoing human rights violations and humanitarian issues stemming from Russia’s unlawful military presence in the occupied territories.
Minister of State Stephen Doughty delivered a firm message during the session:
“For 17 years, Russia’s unlawful military grip on Abkhazia and South Ossetia has defied international law and denied ethnic Georgians their basic human rights. This occupation must end.
Russia must withdraw its forces, reverse its recognition of these so-called independent regions, and open the door to international human rights monitors. Every displaced person – regardless of ethnicity – deserves the right to return home in safety, dignity, and peace.”
Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Lasha Darsalia presented the resolution during the Council session, highlighting the continued violations of international law and the urgent need for global support in addressing the humanitarian and human rights crisis caused by the occupation.
