British Ambassador to Georgia, Gareth Ward, stated in a video address that the UK Foreign Secretary and European partners have called on the Georgian government to release unjustly detained politicians, journalists, and activists. They also urged the repeal of repressive laws and the start of a national dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to resolve the current crisis.
Ward emphasized the UK’s commitment as a member of the Media Freedom Coalition, which protects independent journalists worldwide. Many coalition members are alarmed by the decline of media freedom in Georgia, citing cases like the politically motivated prosecution of journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli for government criticism.
The UK and its European allies view the arrests, arbitrary detentions, and increasing repression of critics as signs of democratic backsliding in Georgia—actions that conflict with European values and norms. They stress the urgent need for Georgia’s government to take steps toward restoring democracy and dialogue.
