The number of sheep in Georgia has decreased. By the end of the second quarter of 2022, Georgian farmers have 954,600 sheep and goats in total, which is 23% less than the same number recorded in 2021.
In the first half of the year, the export of Georgian sheep was significantly reduced. According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), during the reporting period as a whole, live sheep (1,913 tons) worth of $6,352 million were exported, which means a 25.6% annual drop.
It should be noted that Georgia’s major trading partner countries for exports is Saudi Arabia. 40% of the Georgian sheep are sold there. Azerbaijan ranks second among the exporting countries with a 22% share, while Jordan ranks third (17.5%). It is important that the export of live animals and meat from Georgia to Jordan was resumed in 2021. Jordan closed the Georgian market due to Armenian sheep in 2015, the reason was that Armenian sheep entered Jordan from Georgia, which caused a number of problems.
