,,Further deepening of the CAREC cooperation is a strategic choice of all participating countries. I believe that with joint efforts and with the active support of the Asian Development Bank, international agencies and development partners, the CAREC will make a greater contribution to the regional economic and social development," - the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Genadi Arveladze, said at the closing session of the 22nd Ministerial under the Regional Economic Cooperation Program of Central Asia.
According to Genadi Arveladze, the diversification of transport routes is crucial for increasing the sustainability and flexibility of supply chains.
"In this context, the importance of the Middle Corridor as a viable alternative connecting Europe and Asia is increasing. A study carried out by a number of authoritative organizations has been prepared, which focuses on the advantages and opportunities of the Middle Corridor," - the Deputy Minister said.
"Our corridor is multimodal in nature, which is associated with certain difficulties, as it requires the integration and smooth operation of different types of transport. Nevertheless, direct access to the Black Sea allows Georgia to diversify its trade flows and reach more markets. The competitiveness of the Middle Corridor relies on various aspects, such as time, cost, reliability, safety and security. The Middle Corridor is one of the shortest and fastest transport routes between Europe and Asia, and compared to the ocean route, this corridor reduces the duration of transportation by 15-25 days.
Georgia is implementing such important projects as the construction of the East-West highway, railway modernization, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, Anaklia deep-water port, which will significantly increase the capacity of Georgia's transport network. We hope that with the right policies, stronger coordination and agreed decisions, we will be able to develop our transport routes in order to promote sustainable growth in the CAREC region," - Genadi Arveladze noted.
It should be noted that this year Georgia is the chairing country of the CAREC for the first time after joining in 2016. The ministerial meeting was attended by the highest officials of the state agencies of the ten CAREC participating countries, representatives of the private sector, the international diplomatic corps and donor organizations, including the president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Masatsugu Asakawa. The main theme of the 22nd ministerial meeting in Tbilisi was the determination of measures, strategic goals and plans for climate change in the region.
