The imposition of sanctions in the European Union requires unanimity, unfortunately, this unanimity does not exist, stated the European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński.
In response to a question about the imposition of sanctions by the EU, Paweł Herczyńskisaid that the European Union cannot accept violence, impunity, and intimidation.
"As we have been saying for a long time, the European Union cannot tolerate violence, impunity, and intimidation, which has been ongoing for almost three months now. That is why we are working on sanctions for those responsible for human rights violations. In the case of the European Union, the imposition of sanctions requires unanimity. Unfortunately, this unanimity does not exist. Some member states do not join in unanimity, but our leadership is trying. I know there is an attempt to impose sanctions on individuals in Georgia responsible for violence against peaceful demonstrators. As of today, there is no unanimity among the 27 EU member states," said Paweł Herczyński.
The EU Ambassador also responded to a question about targeted sanctions.
"There are several individuals we have singled out as being responsible for violence against peaceful demonstrators, and member states are considering their names. The imposition of sanctions requires unanimity, and at this moment we do not have that, but we are trying to achieve it," the European Union Ambassador concluded.
