"From today, carriers registered in Georgia, who transport cargo by land, were given the opportunity to carry out direct transport operations in the territory of the People's Republic of China. This will contribute to the development of the Middle Corridor, as well as encourage trade between the countries and significantly increase the competitiveness of Georgian carriers in new markets," - the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Guram Guramishvili said.
According to the Deputy Minister, the development of both the Middle Corridor and other transport routes passing through Georgia is a priority of the Georgian government's economic policy.
"Our goal is to promote smooth traffic between countries and attract additional cargo flows by developing the mentioned transport routes. Such initiatives create the new opportunities for Georgian carriers and exporter and importers, which is also very important. The implementation of the agreement will contribute to the deepening of cooperation between Georgia and China not only in the direction of ground transportation, but it will have a positive impact on other areas of economic cooperation as well.
The signed agreement between the Governments of Georgia and the Government of the People's Republic of China on International Passenger and Freight Transportation provides for the exchange of quotas for both bilateral and transit, as well as transportation to and from the third countries for carriers registered in Georgia and the People's Republic of China.
According to the data of the 10th month of 2023, approximately 528.9 thousand tons were transported between Georgia and China by land/sea, which is 4.1% more compared to the figure recorded in the same period last year. The development of direct road traffic will help to further increase the mentioned indicators.
