Tbilisi City Hall has signed a formal agreement with GT Group LLC, the company awarded the tender to supply modern metro carriages for the capital’s transit system. The meeting was attended by Tbilisi Vice Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze and Chinese Ambassador to Georgia Zhou Qian, as GT Group will partner with global rail manufacturer CRRC to implement the project.
Vice Mayor Tkemaladze hailed the agreement as a major milestone in improving public transportation in Tbilisi. “Developing public transport is one of our key priorities. Over the years, we have modernized the metro, rehabilitated stations, and repaired carriages. Now, we are entering a new phase—acquiring European-standard metro carriages. Over the next five years, 111 new carriages will be delivered, providing safer and more comfortable travel for our citizens,” he stated.
Under the agreement, a total of 25 new metro trains will be delivered—14 with four carriages each and 11 with five carriages. The five-carriage trains will operate on the busy Akhmeteli Theatre–Varketili line, replacing existing four-carriage trains to increase passenger capacity and service quality.
The €150 million project (excluding VAT) is supported by Tbilisi City Hall, the Government of Georgia, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
Tbilisi’s metro currently operates 48 trains (192 carriages), many of which, despite undergoing rehabilitation in recent years, are nearing the end of their service life. The new rolling stock will significantly improve safety, efficiency, and comfort for daily commuters. The upgrade is part of the city’s broader commitment to sustainable urban development and modernization of public transit infrastructure.
