Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze criticized the MEGOBARI Act during U.S. congressional discussions, claiming it reflects interference by a so-called "deep state" with global reach, including in Georgia. He alleged that organizations like NED and USAID have funded operations aimed at political destabilization, including coup attempts in Georgia.
Kaladze expressed support for a reset in U.S.-Georgia relations, calling the current state “unacceptable” and advocating for a partnership based on mutual respect. He also welcomed potential changes under a possible Donald Trump presidency, saying it could benefit Georgia.
The MEGOBARI Act, approved by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, calls for sanctions and a review of U.S.-Georgia ties, citing concerns over corruption, democratic backsliding, and interference with Euro-Atlantic integration.
