Ten years have passed since the devastating flood that struck Tbilisi on June 13, 2015, claiming the lives of 21 people and leaving two others still missing. In solemn remembrance, a memorial service was held today to honor the victims of one of the city's deadliest natural disasters.
Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, along with City Council Chairman Zurab Abashidze, Vice-Mayor Giorgi Tkemaladze, deputy mayors, and council members, attended the commemoration. Officials laid flowers at the memorial site and paid heartfelt tribute to those who lost their lives.
“Ten years have passed since the terrible tragedy that befell Tbilisi on June 13, 2015. Twenty-one people lost their lives, and two remain missing. First and foremost, I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims," said Kaladze. "Reflecting on that day is difficult, but what stands out is the unity and solidarity shown by everyone. We came together to support our city and showed the world the power of unity.”
Earlier in the day, members of the Emergency Management Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs visited the site to pay their respects. Firefighters who responded to the disaster also placed flowers at the memorial in tribute.
The 2015 flood, triggered by torrential rains, devastated parts of central Tbilisi. It destroyed homes, bridges, tunnels, roads, and communication lines. Mziuri Park and the Tbilisi Zoo were submerged, resulting in the deaths of numerous animals and widespread damage. Infrastructure across the capital, including the Kojori-Samadlo and Akhaldaba-Tskneti road sections, was severely affected, leaving thousands impacted by the disaster.
