
"A complete rehabilitation of Metekhi Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in Tbilisi, will be launched this month," - Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced on Wednesday.
Kakha Kaladze noted the traffic in the area would be “partially restricted” due to the revamping project worth two million GEL ($649,380/€594,688) on the bridge built in 1951 but with roots back to the medieval era.
“A new asphalt-concrete pavement, renovated sidewalks covered with natural stone tiles, and reinforcement of facades and arches will be completed under the project. After the completion of the works, the Metekhi Bridge will be completely repaired and renovated structure. The cost of the project is about 2 million GEL.,” - the Mayor said.
The Mayor added that other bridges in Tbilisi required renovation.
To be informed, the Metekhi Bridge is located in the Old Town part of Tbilisi, on the river Mtkvari, near the Metekhi Church. Historical notes on past bridges in the location date back to the 8th century and are recorded as locations for important historical events, while the modern construction was completed during the Soviet times.
