Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said there has been no progress in relations between Georgia and the European Union, attributing the situation to the unchanged attitude of European bureaucracy toward the Georgian people and their democratically elected government.
Kobakhidze noted that this attitude remains the key reason behind the current state of relations, while expressing hope that it will eventually change.
According to the Prime Minister, the core problem lies in the failure of European bureaucracy to acknowledge Georgian democracy and the democratic choice made by the country’s citizens. He stressed that this became particularly evident during the 2024 parliamentary elections, when the EU Ambassador openly took an electoral position, calling on voters to support the opposition against the Georgian Dream government.
Kobakhidze stated that European bureaucracy, alongside what he described as the radical opposition, lost those elections and has yet to accept the outcome. He emphasized that, in practice, the Georgian government is fully recognised internationally, as demonstrated by its regular participation in official international events.
“The issue is not recognition,” the Prime Minister said. “Rather, it is resentment toward the Georgian people for once again supporting Georgian Dream and the peaceful, pragmatic course the country has chosen.”
He concluded that as long as the current attitude of European bureaucracy toward Georgia persists, progress in relations will remain impossible. Nevertheless, Kobakhidze reiterated his hope that this stance will change in the future.
