In Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, the cultural park-complex Magtymguly Pyragy was opened during the days of the International Conference of Ministers of Culture.
By the decision of the Government of Turkmenistan and in cooperation with the Embassy of Georgia, a monument to Shota Rustaveli was erected in the park, next to the memorials of famous figures of different eras and nationalities.
The opening of the monument was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports of Georgia Ioseb Baghaturia, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Georgia to Turkmenistan Konstantine Sabiashvili, heads of accredited diplomatic missions and international organizations in Turkmenistan, representatives of the Government and Mejlis of Turkmenistan, and of the culture and education fields.
Ioseb Baghaturia, Konstantine Sabiashvili and embassy employees decorated Shota Rustaveli's monument with flowers. At the opening ceremony, the actors of the Academic Theater of Turkmenistan held a literary performance and read excerpts from the The Knight in the Panther's Skin.
The opening of the monument of the great Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli in the capital of Turkmenistan serves to promote centuries-old Georgian cultural traditions abroad and, at the same time, is a clear confirmation of the close cultural connection between the two countries.
