Jailed former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has issued a firm rejection of political violence, calling for a broad, peaceful protest movement aimed at democratic change.
In a social media post, Saakashvili emphasized that he and his allies are committed to nonviolence:
“Our goal is to build the broadest possible protest front and bring about a change in government through assertive but peaceful means.”
He warned, however, of an alleged plan by the State Security Service—linked, he claimed, to ruling party figure Bidzina Ivanishvili—to stage a provocation intended to discredit the opposition.
“I have received credible information that Ivanishvili’s mafia-associated State Security Service is planning a major provocation, to accuse the United National Movement, especially Levan Khabeishvili, of plotting an armed coup,” Saakashvili stated.
He alleged that the goal is to arrest a large portion of the UNM leadership on fabricated charges of attempting to overthrow the government.
Saakashvili reiterated his call for nonviolence, warning that “anyone advocating for violence is either a provocateur or acting on behalf of Ivanishvili.”
The statement comes amid heightened political tensions in Georgia, with the opposition intensifying its efforts ahead of key electoral and civic mobilizations.
