The Office of the State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality has condemned the second round of the so-called presidential elections held in occupied Abkhazia, describing them as a blatant violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the Ministry, the so-called elections lack any legal basis and cannot reflect the genuine will of the local population. The statement emphasizes that the ongoing occupation, combined with the denial of the right of internally displaced persons and refugees from the Abkhazia region to return to their homes in safety and dignity, fundamentally undermines the legitimacy of the process. Additionally, the widespread and systematic violation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the local indigenous population further precludes the elections from serving as a genuine expression of the people’s will.
The Ministry reiterated the Georgian government's unwavering commitment to its peace policy, which prioritizes de-occupation alongside reconciliation and engagement with the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions. This strategic approach aims to improve the socio-economic conditions of conflict-affected populations while fostering cooperation, rebuilding trust, and promoting shared interests between communities divided by the conflict.
