At the Conference of Speakers of the European Union held in Budapest, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola reaffirmed the Parliament's unwavering support for EU enlargement. In her keynote speech, she emphasized the institution's leading role in championing candidate status for Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
"The European Parliament remains one of the strongest advocates for enlargement," Metsola stated. "That’s why we were the first to call for EU candidate status for Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine."
Addressing the responsibilities of democratic institutions, she highlighted the trust citizens place in their elected representatives. "Last year, people across Europe voted with conviction, regardless of political affiliation, expecting us to deliver on their priorities," she said.
Metsola acknowledged the imperfections of the European project but described them as motivation rather than deterrents. "The European Union is a constant work in progress. This should drive us to work more closely together, not less," she asserted.
Calling for collaboration and ambition, she concluded: "It is not about ‘us versus you.’ As democratically elected representatives, we must shape the future of our shared continent—both nationally and as Europeans."
