According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), in May and June, the country received a record revenue of more than 53.8 million US dollars from the sale of electricity, which is 242.3% more than the figure of 15.7 million in the same period last year.
In particular, the export value in May amounted to 23.6 million dollars, and in June - 30 million dollars. Georgia exports electricity mainly for three months, in May, June and July, but this year the revenue received in only 2 months exceeds the income of all previous years.
The increase in the revenue is related to the increase in the amount of export - for the second month in a row, a record rate of electricity export has been reported in Georgia.
According to the Electricity System Commercial Operator data (ESCO), in May and June 2022, a record amount of 620.6 million kWh of electricity was exported from the country, which is almost 90% more than the indicator of the corresponding period of last year, 326.5 million kWh. The country's main export partners are Turkey and Armenia.
The increase in exports is largely the result of increased output of power plants. In June 2022, the total generation of stations amounted to 1.48 billion kWh, which is 12.2% more than the figure of the same period of 2021, 1.32 billion kWh, and is also a record indicator.
The increase in generation, on the other hand, along with the rehabilitation of the country's largest hydroelectric station, the Enguri HPP, is caused by the abundance of water in the summer season. More than 99% of Georgia's output is produced by hydropower, and the rest is shared by thermal plants and the Kartli Wind Power Plant. That is why the surplus of electricity during the summer season gives the country the opportunity to sell it outside and in this way get additional income.
