On March 25, 1917, the Autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church was restored, marking a significant milestone in the revival of Georgia's statehood and spiritual heritage, as stated by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the Church's regained freedom was the result of the tireless efforts of national figures such as Ilia Chavchavadze, Dimitri Kipiani, Ekvtime Takaishvili, and many others. Their dedication laid the foundation for the unity between clergy and laity and fueled the struggle for Georgia's independence.
Kobakhidze further emphasized that while the Church's autocephaly was restored in 1917, its international recognition did not come until 1990. This recognition was made possible by the extraordinary personal efforts and exceptional authority of His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II. With this, historical justice was served, and the Georgian Church secured its rightful position among the independent Orthodox churches of the world.
The Prime Minister concluded by reminding that this day serves as a reminder of the inseparable connection between Georgia's spiritual values, historical heritage, and national identity.
