
Georgian literary critic, writer, and cultural figure Malkhaz Kharbedia has passed away, according to a statement from the literary and public magazine Arili.
Kharbedia was a highly respected voice in Georgia’s literary and wine communities. He was the founder and president of the Wine Club, and served as editor-in-chief of Hot Chocolate and Arili magazines, as well as the newspaper Marani-Weekend. A passionate advocate for Georgian wine culture, he also held a Level 3 certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET).
Over the course of his distinguished career, Kharbedia was a three-time recipient of the Saba Literary Award, one of Georgia’s most prestigious literary honors:

In 2007, he won for Best Literary Criticism, Essays, and Documentary Prose for his book Private Library.

In 2015, he earned the award again for Best Literary Criticism for Text and Truth – Criticism, Literary Politics, Observations.

In 2021, the magazine Arili, under his editorial leadership, was recognized with a Saba Award for its significant contribution to the development of literature.
Malkhaz Kharbedia’s passing marks a profound loss for Georgia’s literary and cultural communities. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual depth, literary excellence, and a lifelong dedication to the preservation and celebration of Georgian culture.
