Beloved Georgian musician and songwriter Mamuka Charkviani has passed away at the age of 69. The news was confirmed by his sister, Tako Charkviani.
Charkviani was a prominent figure in Georgia’s cultural scene, known for his lyrical compositions often based on the poetry of his father, the celebrated poet Jansug Charkviani. His career bridged music, literature, and public service.
A graduate of Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Philology in 1977, Charkviani initially worked as artistic director of the Metekhi Theater and later served as deputy director of the G. Leonidze Literature Museum (1982–1992). In 1992, he briefly worked as an advisor to the President’s Office before dedicating himself fully to music from 1993 onward.
Since 1995, Charkviani had been a regular performer on the Georgian stage, releasing several albums and receiving numerous awards. These included:
-
First prize at the “Liga” song festival (1996) for "Green Branches"
-
Best Georgian song of the 20th century for "Up and Up" (1999)
-
Golden Disc awards for "You're Not Mine", "Spring", "April", and "Mother’s Time"
He was also recognized internationally, receiving the World Association of Georgian and Jewish Women Prize and a special award at a jazz festival for his songs "Blues" and "Woman on the Beach."
On May 10, 2014, Charkviani’s legacy was honored with a star in front of the Grand Concert Hall of the Philharmonic in Tbilisi.
His voice and artistry will be remembered as a significant part of Georgia’s musical and cultural heritage.
