The production and marketing of vegetable oils will soon be subject to updated regulations, as outlined in the technical regulations published in the Legislative Gazette. These regulations are set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
The primary objective of the technical regulation is to establish uniform standards across the stages of production, processing, and distribution of vegetable oils while safeguarding consumer rights. The document provides detailed criteria that products must meet, covering a wide range of edible vegetable oils, including but not limited to peanut, azalea, babassu, cottonseed, flaxseed, rice bran, coconut, grapeseed, hazelnut, corn, almond, mustard, palm, pistachio, soybean, and sunflower oils with high oleic acid content.
For instance, virgin olive oil must have a free acidity level, expressed as oleic acid, of no more than 2.0 grams per 100 grams, alongside compliance with other specified quality indicators. Additionally, the regulation prohibits the use of the term "olive oil" as the official designation for "olive pomace oil."
Further specifications are detailed in the tables accompanying the regulation.
Regarding the market placement, vegetable oils must comply with the safety requirements established by the Georgian legislation. Moreover, product labels must include information on the appropriate storage conditions to ensure a consumer safety and product quality.
