
According to the Agricultural Review published by Galt & Taggart, meat production in Georgia is increasing, although the sector is still import dependent.
According to the data of 2022, a total of 74.6 million kg of meat was produced in Georgia, and the rate of self-sufficiency was only 49.9%. In the review, it is noted that the largest amount of poultry meat is produced in the country, which accounts for 32.8%, followed by beef production with a 31.9% share, pork with a 27.7% share, and lamb and goat meat with a 7% share.
In addition, compared to the data of 2017, the production of poultry meat increased by 1.9% last year, in 2022 a total of 25 million kg of poultry meat was produced; Beef production also increased by 2.1% compared to 2017 and amounted to 24 million kg in 2022; Pork has increased by 6% in the last five years and was 21 million kg last year. As for the production of lamb and goat meat, compared to 2017, it decreased by 4.9% and produced 5 million kg last year.
It should also be noted that last year Georgia bought 101.1 million kg of meat worth $162.1 million, and exported only 26.2 million kg worth $45.6 million.
Animal husbandry is the largest sector of agriculture. Georgia received revenues of 50.7% of the 915.5 million GEL turnover of the agricultural business from this sector in 2022. According to the 2023 data, 611 companies are operating in the direction of animal husbandry. In addition, there are 3 large and 9 medium companies in the field.
