According to EastFruit analysts, the prices for the new potato crop in Georgia have fallen sharply. Many Georgian farmers have planted large quantities of potatoes in anticipation of a rise in commodity prices due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and, consequently, food security risks in the region, despite the rising production costs.
Food security may indeed be a problem in some countries globally, but so far Georgian farmers say there is no demand for the Georgian potato exports. Consequently, prices fell. At the moment, the wholesale price of potatoes is only the third of what it was a month ago: 1 kilogram of potatoes costs an average of GEL 1, which is very close to the 2019 figure for the same period.
Farmers say the local demand for the product is currently low. According to them, Russia imported a lot of potatoes last season, but the things are different this season. Therefore, growers are in no hurry to pick potatoes. As for the supply chain, it remains virtually unchanged: if they want to export from Georgia, importers have to arrive on the ground and buy potatoes.
