Patriarch Ilia II of Georgia addressed an international theological conference in Thessaloniki, calling on the Orthodox Church to help society navigate the moral and spiritual challenges posed by artificial intelligence and modern technologies.
In his message to the conference—held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the journal Theologia—the Patriarch emphasized that the Church must remain a source of true education and values, using technology wisely to reinforce Christian teachings.
He warned that while modern technologies offer immense benefits in communication, learning, and healthcare, they also pose serious risks that could lead humanity toward chaos and moral decline. He stressed the Church’s responsibility to help people discern truth from distortion in an age of information overload.
“Orthodox teaching, rooted in divine wisdom, must engage in dialogue with science and guide the ethical use of technology,” he said.
Patriarch Ilia II also expressed gratitude to Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece for organizing the event.
