Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II has sent a heartfelt letter of condolence following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. The letter, addressed to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, conveys deep sorrow over the Pope’s death and extends sympathy to the clergy, faithful, and all who held him dear.
“We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis,” the Patriarch writes. “Please accept our sincere condolences and share our heartfelt sympathy with the hierarchs, clergy, and the congregation of your Church — with all who cherish his memory.”
In his message, Ilia II also reflected on the close ties fostered between the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Vatican during Pope Francis’ papacy. He expressed gratitude for the Pope’s support, particularly for granting permission to celebrate the Holy Liturgy in the Georgian language at a church in Rome since 2014. He also recalled with appreciation the Pope’s invitation to the Choir of the Holy Trinity Cathedral to perform in the Sistine Chapel — a gesture that introduced Georgia’s unique polyphonic church hymns and folk songs to a global audience.
“Pope Francis was widely known for his humility, his many talents, and his tireless advocacy for peace and social justice. He was a true servant of humanity,” the Patriarch noted.
The letter concludes with a prayer for Pope Francis’ immortal soul and a message of deep respect for his enduring spiritual and humanitarian legacy.
