Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has accused a European Commission spokesperson of supporting the October 4 protest, which he claims was aimed at overthrowing the Georgian government.
Papuashvili said the spokesperson's statement on September 23 amounted to backing the assembly and claimed that Brussels ignored his repeated calls to distance themselves from it. He argued that after the failed protest, the EU instead criticised Georgian authorities rather than condemning the organisers.
Calling the EU’s response "vulgar propaganda," Papuashvili said it was unacceptable for an unelected official to attack Georgia’s democratically elected government and accused the spokesperson of using ethnic slurs and inflammatory comparisons.
“The Georgian people will not accept being looked down upon,” he stated, vowing strong responses to future remarks of this kind.
