The Georgian Parliament has approved amendments to the Organic Laws on Political Unions of Citizens and on the Constitutional Court of Georgia during a plenary session, with 80 MPs voting in favor at the third and final hearing.
The legislative changes, initiated by the Georgian Dream faction, were presented by Tornike Cheishvili, First Deputy Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee.
“This legislative package is designed to clarify the powers of the Constitutional Court and to address the emergence of so-called successor parties,” Cheishvili explained. “It introduces necessary legal mechanisms to ensure an appropriate response when such situations arise.”
Under the amendments, if a political party is banned and a new party is established as its de facto continuation, the Constitutional Court would be equipped with the authority to intervene and respond swiftly within a reinforced legal framework.
