During a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) session, Zeynep Yildiz, a member of the Assembly, emphasized the need for dialogue and cooperation when addressing Georgia's internal challenges, voicing concern over the tone of recent debates.
“I would like to draw your attention to the fact that addressing the challenges and problems of Georgian society—and supporting the Georgian authorities in finding solutions—is indeed the basis of the resolution we are currently discussing. The key to achieving this is true dialogue and cooperation,” Yildiz stated.
She stressed that fostering constructive communication should take precedence over punitive approaches. “Promoting dialogue and strengthening cooperation will be the key to achieving constructive and beneficial results in our current debate.”
Expressing concern over the direction of prior resolutions, Yildiz criticized the emphasis on sanctions and the perceived coercive tone. “While it is essential for an independent and sovereign country, including Georgia, to remain open to constructive criticism, embracing methods that may resemble coercion can be counterproductive, as this approach has not achieved its intended objectives,” she said.
Highlighting the absence of the Georgian delegation from the current discussion, Yildiz warned against isolating Georgia from the European dialogue. “If we continue down this path and close the door to dialogue... we risk undermining the possibility of future cooperation.”
In closing, she called on her colleagues to shift the Assembly's approach toward inclusivity and mutual understanding: “We should support the path of dialogue, understanding, and cooperation rather than continued isolation and confrontation. Therefore, I will not be supporting this report.”
