The Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the execution of St. George. According to the legend, Emperor Diocletian ordered to torture Saint George on the wheel following his failed attempt to bribe George with the promise of money, land, and slaves to entice him into turning against his faith. The 30-year-old saint was decapitated on 23 April 303.
Festive liturgy will be held in all functioning churches of Georgia from 10:00 am. The Georgian Orthodox Church considers St. George to be the patron saint of horsemen, farmers, shepherds and travelers.
St. George’s Day is celebrated twice in Georgia. May 6 is the day of the execution of the martyr George, and November 23 is the day of his martyrdom on the wheel.
